Times Gone By

So long ago...

Oh, how proud we were, holding our little flags as we watched the young men march off to war. Drammakin Lake still with its natural ecosystem and a sky... From our home, at least, not yet as polluted as the city.

How things change.

From aquatic tranquility to the Lake Of Mutations...

How did I once describe it to Nyder? Ah yes - a chemical soup for a sky above, with a scarred, radioactive wasteland below. A glimpse into purgatory which we should have made paradise.

Were it not for the politicians.

A realm of expertise always favoured by my mother. One which circumstances forced me to more properly comprehend.

Yarvell... What pity I hold for you. Unable to truly see the value of the work needed.

I still owe you an apology, sister. You were right about the ruins.

I still wonder if fortune or calamity was to dictate Magrantine's reappearance there... In amongst the Varga, the mutos and assorted genetic detritus which, even then, had come to litter our planet with considerable abandon.

Shan... Even she came to hold your pacifist sympathies. So many did. It has been an age since I thought upon her, yet the similarities do not escape me.

The Supremo, the Council, Scientific Elite... Quested.

Even Ludella.

All of them. Gone the way of Skaro, itself and none of them had to. Wasted lives. There is no responsibility greater than that of potential and their own was squandered! We could have ended the war, renewed our landscape - put an end to the genetic stagnation which threatened our race!

All of it... All. Without exception. It taught me, it demonstrated the futility of those who would be content to exist as mere remnants. There is nothing so pre-ordained as the willingness of evolution to seek a clear and utter dominance of one form of life over all others.

The supreme.

The only.

I wonder, does this self-serving creature, the Admiral who inhabits this sealed little world between dimensions... Does it consider itself to be such an example? To have such power over not life and death, alone - but our very destinies...

Or were they, too, once also a captive of this place? Perhaps one who arose and took power to wield it for themselves.

Tar lubeck ka'leed uth ricta da'lek...

I often wonder if he's merely a cog in a greater machine. After all, there is the distinct possibility of other Barges out there. It stands to reason, then, that there is some other person or... thing controlling the Admirals of all the hypothetical Barges.

The Admiral could merely be just another loyal servant.

The rank of Admiral certainly infers control of more than one such vessel... Curious, that we have never heard decrees from the ship's Captain.

Nor was I able to locate one during my all too brief period of substitution.

He could be controlling things remotely, from elsewhere. It would make sense, if he had multiple ships under his command and no captains.

Imagine I got reply notification!
They could, indeed, be under the control of remote apparatus. It would not be implausible...

Private
Which would, of course, make taking the... wheel, so to speak, without access to the control room a simple mater. With the proper tools in place, of course.

Re: Private
I did find it relatively simplistic...

An ecosystem with a single dominant life form is ultimately unsustainable. But I suppose that has never entered into your equations, has it?

Ridiculous. It is the very goal nature strives for.

It is eminently feasible - even desirable.

Dominant species running unchecked will deplete their resources eventually. What is the good in having dominion over a used-up, polluted rock or two?

To be truly dominant, it must therefore, also, be self-sufficient.

So you become a race of Ouroboros serpents, devouring your own tail to survive.

...I don't think the Admiral is the latter part of what you describe. Taking power, wielding it for himself and all that. If he were, he would have undoubtedly not cared to use that power to the ends this place requires. It's too specific, and too limiting for someone who would want to take it.

And I don't think I've ever heard you mention names before. Those things you brought with you the first time -- do they have names?

They had... Designations, yes. None quite so inefficient as those yourself is accustomed to. They used what was sufficient for their needs.

Nevertheless, this vessel - and its capabilities - would not have been constructed, were there no purpose behind it. Mere insanity would not provide the means by which to design such intricacies, while boredom can be relieved by far easier means.

No. There is something the creature gains from successful... Shifts in moral output. To what ends this is - how it fuels them - is beyond our deductive capabilities, for now.

Admittedly, metaphysics are not a speciality of my own...

So you weren't talking about more of them before, then. What's so inefficient about names?

...More to the point, why do they have to be efficient?

The identities of those who played a greater or lesser role in who I was to become... Relics of the past. Where one cannot significantly change it, one must learn from it.

Alpha-numeric codes are perfectly adequate for their needs. Automated categorisation and communication are carried out with greater ease in this manner.

Generating needless waste in anything but the pursuit of ultimate goals is... Counter-productive.

So forsake your given name and take a number.

Sheer numbers, dear lady.
